About Status

Status is building the tools and infrastructure for the advancement of a secure, private, and open web3.

With the high level goals of preserving the right to privacy, mitigating the risk of censorship, and promoting economic trade in a transparent, open manner, Status is building a community where anyone is welcome to join and contribute.

As an organization, Status seeks to push the web3 ecosystem forward through research, creation of developer tools, and support of the open source community.

As a product, Status is an open source, Ethereum-based app that gives users the power to chat, transact, and access a revolutionary world of DApps on the decentralized web. But Status is also building foundational infrastructure for the whole Ethereum ecosystem, including the Nimbus ETH 1.0 and 2.0 clients, the Keycard hardware wallet, and the Waku messaging protocol (a continuation of Whisper).

As a team, Status has been completely distributed since inception.  Our team is currently 100+ core contributors strong, and welcomes a growing number of community members from all walks of life, scattered all around the globe.

We care deeply about open source, and our organizational structure has minimal hierarchy and no fixed work hours. We believe in working with a high degree of autonomy while supporting the organization’s priorities.

Waku

Waku is a decentralized communication network and family of protocols. It removes centralized third parties from our messaging, enabling private, secure, censorship-free communication (= message exchange).

Waku is designed for generalized messaging, enabling both human-to-human or machine-to-machine communication. Thanks to Waku, dApps and other projects can add communication features to their product while keeping it decentralized.

There are many use cases for Waku, for example:

  • Chat: Status uses Waku to enable person-to-person, censorship-resistant chat features without risk of metadata collection by a 3rd party.

  • Open Market: Railgun, a privacy focused ZK Layer-2, uses Waku to enable Railgun relayers to advertise their prices to wallet users and said users to select and trade with relayers. Others are building ride sharing and marketplace platforms using Waku.

  • Wallet/dApp communications: With Waku, developers can add notifications and other communication features directly in the users’ wallet.

We currently have 3 implementations of Waku: JavaScript, Nim and Go that allow Waku usage on desktop, mobile, browser and in the cloud.

Finally, Waku is built as an agnostic public good for the Ethereum and multichain ecosystem. Waku is an open source project, that is not tied to any specific token. We are building Waku to be a self-sustainable protocol maintained and evolved by a community, as Ethereum is today.

Waku Product Team

The Waku Product Team is pushing for the adoption of Waku by platforms, developers & node operators. The team drives the outreach effort by organizing talks and workshops at Web3 conferences, setting prizes at hackathons, providing content for Waku websites, ensuring that implementations are properly documented, etc. With the help of our business developer, the team also ensures that communication channels with Waku users are in place to feedback issues and priorities back to the development teams.

The Waku Product team was recently split from the Vac research team so we could dedicate effort to productize Waku and make it production ready: stable and scalable.
