Crypto accounting differs from standard corporate work in a few specific ways: digital assets are valued and disclosed under their own rules, treasury may hold tokens as well as cash, and transactions have to be reconciled from on-chain data rather than a single bank feed. Familiarity with a subledger tool such as Bitwave or Cryptio, and a qualification such as CPA or ACA, come up often in listings.
What is crypto accounting?
Accounting for a business that holds and moves digital assets. The core work is familiar: close, reconciliations, reporting and controls. The inputs are different, so you reconcile on-chain transactions, price assets at the right moment, and handle gains, losses and impairment under the standard your company reports on. Most teams run a crypto subledger alongside the usual ERP.
Do crypto finance jobs require a CPA?
Not all of them. Controller, audit and technical accounting roles often ask for a CPA, ACA or local equivalent, while FP&A, treasury and analyst roles usually weigh modeling and reporting experience more heavily. If you already hold a qualification, the gap to close is crypto-specific: wallets, custody, stablecoins and how token holdings are tracked.
What companies hire crypto accountants?
Exchanges, custodians, funds and trading firms, payment and stablecoin companies, mining operations, and the protocol foundations that manage a treasury. Traditional employers hire for this too, including audit firms with digital asset practices and public companies holding crypto on the balance sheet.
